Even though it is a St. Patrick’s themed giveaway, I found myself drawing a blank as to what “Irish” or “Lucky” themed book I would choose to giveaway. It is at that precise moment that I decided to be unique and do an UN-LUCKY themed giveaway. So excuse me if I stray away from the purpose of St. Patrick’s Day for a moment. One of the unluckiest characters (because she is umm… not alive) I have ever read is Alona, from Stacey Kade’s The Ghost and the Goth. ***Also, after posting this, Stacey Kade so kindly reminded me that Will, the male protagonist, is indeed Irish. How fitting!*** This is one of my favorite reads of 2010 and I am impatiently awaiting the arrival of her second book titled Queen of the Dead due to be released in June. So for one LUCKY person, you can win The Ghost and The Goth. You will hopefully have it read (and be in complete love with it) in perfect timing for the release of her second book! Here is a quick summary of the book, courtesy of

Alona Dare–Senior in high school, co-captain of the cheerleading squad, Homecoming Queen three years in a row, voted most likely to marry a movie star… and newly dead.

I’m the girl you hated in high school. Is it my fault I was born with it all-good looks, silky blond hair, a hot bod, and a keen sense of what everyone else should not be wearing? But my life isn’t perfect, especially since I died. Run over by a bus of band geeks—is there anything more humiliating? As it turns out, yes—watching your boyfriend and friends move on with life, only days after your funeral. And you wouldn’t believe what they’re saying about me now that they think I can’t hear them. To top it off, I’m starting to disappear, flickering in and out of existence. I don’t know where I go when I’m gone, but it’s not good. Where is that freaking white light already?

Will Killian–Senior in high school, outcast, dubbed “Will Kill” by the popular crowd for the unearthly aura around him, voted most likely to rob a bank…and a ghost-talker.

I can see, hear, and touch the dead. Unfortunately, they can also see, hear and touch me. Yeah, because surviving high school isn’t hard enough already. I’ve done my best to hide my “gift.” After all, my dad, who shared my ability, killed himself because of it when I was fifteen. But lately, pretending to be normal has gotten a lot harder. A new ghost—an anonymous, seething cloud of negative energy with the capacity to throw me around—is pursuing me with a vengeance. My mom, who knows nothing about what I can do, is worrying about the increase in odd incidents, my shrink is tossing around terms like “temporary confinement for psychiatric evaluation,” and my principal, who thinks I’m a disruption and a faker, is searching for every way possible to get rid of me. How many weeks until graduation?

Been dying to read this book!!
my most unluckiest moment was when I was running then slipped and fell at the dance when I was wearing a skirt last year in front of a group of people!!! D: SO EMBARRASSING.
    I subscribed!

  2. Yay for your first contest!!!

Let’s see, most unlucky moment: I”m in my last semester of college now, but one day in 7th grade still stands out as my most embarrassing moment EVER (which I’m going to count as unlucky). I was in the computer lab, sitting next to a guy that I had a crush on, but had never worked up the courage to even talk to him. I get up from my chair to turn in an assignment to the teacher, except I never did make it to his desk because my foot got caught under the chair. (side note: I wore a size 10 shoe in 7th grade…I’ve grown into my feet now, but at the time…they were ginormous) So I go flying towards the ground (face down) and the chair falls on top of me. To my horror, my crush (along with the rest of the class, AND the teacher) is laughing hysterically. I mean, he almost had tears running down his face!! I’ve gotten over the guy and the incident, but unfortunately, my clumsiness has remained. :)

    I tweeted!!/mallarymott/status/48240943895293952

    Thanks for the contest!!

  3. Great giveaway. I subscribed to your Blog. Too many embarrassing moments to pick just one. I’m sure my two teenage daughter could have a field day commenting about me embarrassing them.

  4. I’ve heard good things about this one. I’m also participating in the hop in case anyone wants to wander over and check out what I’m giving away.

  5. Thanks for the giveaway! This book has been on my to read list, so I’d love a chance to win it!

    + 1 for unlucky moment

I’m beginning to think my entire 22nd year of existence is unlucky. Murphey’s Law is totally applicable; anything that can go wrong probably will go wrong. I thought everything would be amazing when I got my first car ever. My father was passing it down to me so he could make room for his brand new car– you know the expensive kind men get when they hit the mid-life crisis? The car I got was a Ford Taurus and it was well used– 133,000 miles on it. I was supposed to get it for free considering it’s pretty ancient, but at last minute my parents took 1,500 out of my college fund to pay for repairs. Blast! Still, I shouldn’t complain, but things don’t get any better. I’ve had the car for less than a year and it breaks down every two months or so. SO far, it’s been in the shop five times. I’m looking at a sixth time because the car won’t register that the doors are closed and at random times the car alarm will start going off. I’m beginning to think the car is possessed.

  6. thanks for the chance to win. :]
my unlucky moment sadly was on my birthday. i sat on a big wod of gum at the movie theater and couldn’t get up [my brother (also my quad) had to help me get unattached]. when i finally got unstuck i had to walk around with gum stuck on my butt of my new pants. the worst part is this all wouldn’t have happened if i didn’t switched seats with my mom…i call it taking one for the team.

    • Eww! I have managed to make it 5 years without dropping my phone in the toilet but my stepmom is not so lucky. She has dropped it in the toilet four times during the past couple years. Good luck!

  7. Thank you so much for the giveaway!

+1 – my most unluckiest moment was when my parents had shampooed our carpets and all of my stuff was in my closet – including my alarm clock. Why, I have no idea. But the alarm was still on, and decided to go off at 5 in the morning. So I’m terribly tired and trying to reach the box on the top shelf (and I’m short). As luck would have it, there was a medium-sized picture frame, heavy, on top of the box when I was tilting the box. And BAM! Smack into my forehead. I had a gigantic bump and cut on my head all that day. People really started to wonder about me.

  8. April – myshelfconfessions at gmail dot com

I think (one) of my unluckiest moments was when I was in 6th grade, my first band concert, we were all walking in a line to our assigned seats, and I was wearing clogs with nylons, and of course the inside ofmy shoes were slippery because of this, and my shoe fell off, so I had to walk back and get it, meanwhile everyone else kept walking, so by the time I got my shoe and walked back, I had to literally walk in front of everyone already in their seats to get to my assigned seat!!! Ugh!

  9. Hi! This book sounds sooo cute!!!

    Let’s see……I tweeted

    I subscribed…..and my unlucky story……

In elementary school we were in music class. She had several people at the front of the class. I kept thinking “pleaaedontcallmepleasedontcallmepleasedontcallme.” Sure enough… slowly I crawl out from behind my little desk……I walk up…..doing the little pee pee dance…whisper in her ear how bad I have to use the restroom. She tells me I should have done that BEFORE class & to go on up to the front of the class…

I wasn’t kidding. I HAD TO GO. There is nothing worse than doing the pee pee dance in front of your classmates when you’re 8!!!!

So, to answer your question, YES!!!! I pee’d all over, in front of everyone!!! My mom had to be called. I hid in the bathroom for as long as I could afterwards……but the next time I was doing the pee pee dance I got to go to the restroom……lol

    • Oh my goodness gracious! You poor thing. Everyone peed in school at least once (well at least I think they did) but not in front of the whole class!!! I’m sure your teacher felt bad after that. Good luck on the giveaway!

(+1) My most un-lucky moment was when I was at a night club. I went to the restroom and came out with toilet paper on my shoe to the dance floor. A girl came out of the restroom and helped me get the toilet paper off of my shoe =/. I sure wish my friends had caught it before I left the restroom.

Thank you so much for the chance!
    Happy St. Patrick’s Day!!

  11. Awesome give away!

My most unlucky moment- Im 23 and I go to bingo with my dad(hes 76) Its a great way to spend time with him. I was one ball shy of the cover all and my number came up on the monitor and a lady yelled bingo before my ball was called….totally sucked! lol

  12. This sounds like such a fun book. I love when authors inject their sense of humor in their books. And I also enjoy books set in schools.

As for unlucky moments, twice I have lost rings. The first time a birthstone ring that I had received as a gift was stolen from my gym locker at school. The second time, I gave my brother-in-law a diamond ring that my father got for me so he could take it to the jeweler. He put the ring in his handkerchief and stuck it in his pocket. Well, you can probably guess what happened next. He pulled out the hankie to use and totally forgot about the ring. The ring fell on the ground. They went back and looked all over but it was gone. Hubby was REALLY mad at his carelessness and I was livid. That ring, although not all that expensive, had sentimental value to me.

    • Jewelry is always hard to part with! I have had very inexpensive jewelry that meant alot to me either get lost or broken. Hopefully no more lost rings for you! Two is plenty. Good luck on the giveaway (it is a fun book! totally love it)

  13. Hi! Please enter me :)
My most unlucky moment, my my which one to pick from? The one where I was in a bad mood and accidentally talked back to my professor (I thought it was an annoying friend tapping my shoulder), or when I was caught staring at my crush which then led me to duck my head and not look at where I was going and ran into a trash can? Or maybe when I really believed that there wasn’t going to be a quiz so I didn’t study and there was a quiz anyway… D: So depressing!!!

  14. Thanks for the giveaway….

Okay for the Unluckiest day…. lol

one morning this winter I was getting ready to head out of the house to take my 2 year old to daycare and I made a big deal to my little one that the front porch was icy and it was very important to be very careful so you didn’t fall … I told her this before going out the door and told her to hold on to the rail going down the stairs so she didn’t slip and fall on her butt….. Well as I walked out on the porch and got her out of the house I started down the stairs and whooo there I went slid right down the stairs landed on my butt and looked up and my little girl is standing there telling me “mom you said it was icy to be careful and to hold on to the rail… mom you didn’t hold on to the rail and now your on your butt” lol

I guess I should of took my own advice lol….

    • Oh gosh! First of all, OUCH! Falling on the ice hurts. Second, I always tell my younger siblings to do one thing and then I go ahead and do the opposite so I know how that goes. Good Luck!

+1 most unlucky moment = ha, who really knows? Most probably some little thing like losing my car keys, caused me to be 20 minutes late for a party where I would have met the man of my dreams and then there was that time that I didn’t win the trip around the world, little things like that, ya know! :-)

    thanks for the chance.

    • I always think about that; if I would have shown up a little sooner or later, would I have met Mr. Perfect? Little un-lucky moments like those sure make the days interesting. Thanks for participating!

  16. Count me in!

Unlucky moment: In h.s., I sent my friend to talk to the guy I had a crush on & keep him occupied for a few moments. You can guess the rest . . . (sigh).

  18. Looks like a good book! Oh gosh I’ve had some un-lucky moments in life. 2 stand out as both un-lucky and hilarious. I was pregnant with my 2nd child, so close to being done. I went to the pantry to get something (we were in student housing). We had one of our surround sound speakers just sitting on top of the pantry cupboard. So when I opened the door, it managed to move it just enough. WHACK! got some staples and was all good, besides a bit of a headache (and a police blotter note).
Then I was pregnant with my 3rd, we took our 2 older kid sledding. We got to the bottom of the hill and as I tried to stand up out of the sled, my feet went opposite directions. Full splits, and an uncontrollable bladder (pregnant remember). I finished the outing sitting in the warm car :)

+1 unlucky moment: I found out that the exam I had studied for more than a week on, was canceled. Then, I found out that it was already announced but I had missed it. Yup. Really bad day.

    thanks for the giveaway!

    • My unlucky moment took place at the beach also, but that story is for a different day :) As long as no one gets hurt, falling in a hole is always hilarious. Thanks for sharing the giveaway love!

  20. This book has been on my wish list forever!! Thanks for the giveaway.
    I’m a follower of course.
Most unlucky moment-I was re-enacting/mocking Pamela Anderson from Baywatch on a beach in a swim suit complete with kick board in front of family and friends in public -I actually tripped and fell face first in front of everyone. My brother has never let me forget it-and usually re-enacts entire scene at least twice a year during family get togethers…feel my pain.

  21. Awesome idea to play against the “lucky” theme…and great pick! I’ve been meaning to read this one…count me in.

Thanks for the chance…and happy reading!

  22. My most unlucky moment, I have those several times a month. I have a very weak ankle from a car accident. Stepped on the brakes so hard my shoe actully cut into my ankle. Now, it gives out from time to time making me fall at random moments. Now, it’s somewhat funny and my kids get a good laugh, but twice it gave out when my kids were newborns and those were my unlucky moments as I was trying to rock my child to sleep and falling and twisting around and trying to fall to my back. It can never happen at home when I’m doing nothing, my ankle gives out while I’m carrying groceries, in the mall, walking down the driveway. You get the picture LOL

I’ve had my eye on this book for a while, thanks for the chance

  23. Love the cover of this book! Sounds awesome. Thanks for the giveaway.

My most unlucky moment was in third grade when I needle got stuck in my knee eye first while making Hawaiian leis. Surgery was required.

  24. Subscribed! :)

Hmmm, well, how about the time I was at Disney Word and the escalator decided to attack me by eating my shoe laces? I’m flat on my face… they took forever trying to figure out how to stop it… and my new sneakers were trashed. :( Total unlucky fail.

  25. Thanks for the contest, I am a follower and a new email subscriber! My unlucky thing for this St Patricks Day is that I got really sick with Bronchitis and had to go to the Dr for the 2nd time this week for more meds. Of course we all got sick over spring break when the weather was FINALLY nice and we were stuck indoors, lol;)

  26. Awesome giveaway! I like the un-lucky theme!

+1 Un-lucky Moment: When I was visiting my sister at her college, I was trying to impress/flirt with these boys in the dining hall. Well as I was paying attention to them and not to where I was walking, I ran into a table and spilled my whole lunch on myself. Yeah…that was awesome.

+1 for subscribing (awesome blog, BTW)
    +1 for most unlucky moment:
Probably when I totaled my brand new 2002 convertible. I’d only have it 6 weeks. The insurance company had no idea what to do – no one had ever wrecked a car that new before. Go me? LOL

    • Thanks for calling my blog awesome, totally made my day! And you poor thing. Totaling a car is so not cool but the fact that your insurance company didn’t know what to do, that’s just crazy! Best of luck on the giveaway

  28. ha! now thats a cute book :)
You’re blog is great! so Upbeat! (at least, thats how i read it in my head lol)
my most unlucky moment… having just gotten my gallbladder removed, I can’t move, stuck on the bed with my 1 1/2 yr old son, and my fiance’ is out to the store. My son jumps, loses his balance, and falls off the bed, fracturing his little elbow. I couldnt catch him and felt SO bad. BUT, i carried him with stitches and all to the neighbors :) Guess i was lucky they were home lol.

    • I don’t think you know how much that comment about my blog meant to me! I am glad you like it and find it upbeat; I sure as heck try and keep it that way. You and your son! I feel so bad for both of you. That is such a bad time for him to fall and get hurt. Best of luck on the giveaway!

Unlucky moment: freshman year in high school, i was going to my locker and as i was about to open the door of the building, one of my classmates opened it and hit me in the face. He wouldn’t stop apologizing. In second hour he kept saying how sorry he was. Then he asked a girl for a pencil and as she threw it to him, I stood up and it hit me in the face. He said he was so sorry, but I felt bad for him. +1
